Bahrain is planning to build a new international airport on an artificial island off the north coast of the main island. The new airport will be built to accommodate the predicted growth in Bahrain’s tourists.
According to Arabian Business, Bahrain’s minister of transportations and telecommunications, Kamal Bin Ahmed, said that Bahrain has started its plans on building the new airport in 2011 on an island off Bahrain.
He added that the ministry commissioned a technical study to determine the perfect location for the new international airport which was completed by the end of last year.
Meanwhile, the old Bahrain International Airport is currently witnessing an expansion project. The government appointed two foreign firms (Aeroports de Paris and Hill International) as lead consultants on the project and to complete the final design.
The expansion includes adding 24 airport bridges, a new terminal, new arrival and departure lounges, while the project is scheduled to be completed in 2019.
