In the aftermath of the oil prices\u2019 crisis, several measures have been taken to diminish the negative impact of the crisis, including levying the Value-added Taxes (VAT). The beginning of this year witnessed the levying of Value-added Tax in Bahrain.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What is the Value-added Tax?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3598\" src=\"https:\/\/www.weetas.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/2-What-is-the-Value-added-Tax-EN.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"415\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.weetas.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/2-What-is-the-Value-added-Tax-EN.png 601w, https:\/\/www.weetas.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/2-What-is-the-Value-added-Tax-EN-300x207.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 601px) 100vw, 601px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike the direct sales taxes, VAT is an indirect tax levied on each single stage of producing and distributing a product individually; it is currently levied in more than 160 countries around the globe with percentages that vary between 5% and 15%.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>How is the value-added tax levied in the GCC?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3599\" src=\"https:\/\/www.weetas.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/3-How-is-the-value-added-tax-levied-in-the-GCC-EN.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"415\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.weetas.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/3-How-is-the-value-added-tax-levied-in-the-GCC-EN.png 601w, https:\/\/www.weetas.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/3-How-is-the-value-added-tax-levied-in-the-GCC-EN-300x207.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 601px) 100vw, 601px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2016, the Gulf Countries have signed a Unified VAT Agreement according to which the six member states commit to levy a 5% VAT, though the range of the products to be included or excluded from the agreement is to be determined by each state individually.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The signed agreement listed three different tax rates to be levied:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>1- Basic Rate:<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.weetas.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/4-Basic-Rate-EN.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"415\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.weetas.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/4-Basic-Rate-EN.png 601w, https:\/\/www.weetas.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/4-Basic-Rate-EN-300x207.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 601px) 100vw, 601px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the 5% tax rate to be levied on products and services. Registered business owners can reclaim their <\/span><b>input value-added tax <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(the tax paid by registered business owners for the provision of their goods and services).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>2- Zero Rate:<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3601\" src=\"https:\/\/www.weetas.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/5-Zero-Rate-EN.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"415\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.weetas.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/5-Zero-Rate-EN.png 601w, https:\/\/www.weetas.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/5-Zero-Rate-EN-300x207.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 601px) 100vw, 601px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this case, the final consumer will not pay additional value-added taxes on the product they purchase. However, the owners of VAT-registered businesses can still reclaim their input value-added tax.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>3- Exemption:<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3602\" src=\"https:\/\/www.weetas.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/6-Exemption-EN.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"415\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.weetas.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/6-Exemption-EN.png 601w, https:\/\/www.weetas.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/6-Exemption-EN-300x207.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 601px) 100vw, 601px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Goods and services that are exempted from the value-added tax in Bahrain. The excluded products include property rentals and sales as well as financial services.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What info should be included in your business receipts?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tax bureau obligates the registered businesses to issue receipts for their sales with the following information included:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Business name. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Business address.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Business VAT number.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Invoice issuance date.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Invoice sequencing number<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buyer\u2019s name.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buyer\u2019s address.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buyer\u2019s VAT number.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VAT applied to each item.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Final value after VAT is added.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>When should tax returns be filed?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3607\" src=\"https:\/\/www.weetas.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/11-When-should-tax-returns-be-filed-EN.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"415\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.weetas.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/11-When-should-tax-returns-be-filed-EN.png 601w, https:\/\/www.weetas.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/11-When-should-tax-returns-be-filed-EN-300x207.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 601px) 100vw, 601px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As per the regulations for the value-added tax in Bahrain, the tax period should not be shorter than one month.
