Out with the Old: How to efficiently sell your used furniture and appliances

Deciding to part with used furniture and appliances is bittersweet. On the one hand, you know it’s time for them to go. On the other hand, however, they probably come with their own sentimental value. If you decide you no longer need an object, it doesn’t mean someone else can’t use.

So it is important to consider whether your item still has a few good years left in it. If that is the case, then why not sell it to those who need it. The internet is a treasure when it comes to websites dedicated solely to that purpose.

With a little research, you will be able to identify trustworthy websites and buyers. Before you dive into that, here are a few general guidelines to keep in mind when selling your used furniture and appliances.

1. Clean it up

In order for someone to choose your piece of used furniture or appliance, it should be more or less, spotless. Dust it off, remove old stains, even have it professionally cleaned if you have to. Weigh out the expenses of getting it cleaned considering your asking price. No one wants to buy a used couch with an impossible stain.

2. Release your inner photographer

A picture is worth a thousand words, especially when it comes to ditching old items. Take nice, clear pictures that accentuate your item. Try out different angles and lighting, as well as adding small decorative pieces. Sometimes it helps to see a picture of how large your fridge’s interior is.

3. Write a specific ad

Most people tend to overlook the importance of a clear and concise ad. However, this will save you a lot of time. As it will keep interested buyers from calling only to ask about dimensions for example. Be descriptive, add as many details as you can about the color, size, and how long you’ve had it for.

4. Write an interesting ad

5. Price it right

Determine an appropriate price for yours by going through other similar items for sale. If you go too high, no one will contact you, and if you go too low, well, then you won’t be too happy about it. Also, remember that people are more inclined to bargain over prices of used items. Put a margin and set a bottom price for yourself that you won’t go under.

6. Get ready to filter

A lot of people will contact you asking for more information, negotiating the price, and other questions they have in mind. Learn to differentiate between those who are really interested and those who are simply surveying the market. It won’t be easy, but you’ll get the hang of it.

7. Be patient

Finally, always remember to be patient. Although some manage to sell their items overnight, that is not always the case. For some, it may take weeks, even months, before they finally find a buyer willing to pay the right price. Don’t lose hope!

Furniture 

Though not the easiest to get rid of, used furniture is in fact, sellable. First, however, make sure that it is in the proper condition to be used by someone else. Couches, armchairs, and the like, should have functioning upholstery.

It is also important to remember that you should clarify what you are selling. If there are a few small cushions you don’t want to sell, mention that in your ad. Never forget, the more specific and straightforward you are, the less of a hassle you’ll have to go through.

Home Appliances

Determine the damage, if any, your appliance may be suffering from. If you’re trying to sell your microwave, for example, make sure there is no internal damage. Internal damage can affect the appliance’s lifetime and can be a problem for potential buyers.

External damage, however, is not something to worry about. Consult an expert on whether the damage has any long-term effects. As long as you mention it in your ad and notify buyers that it is a minor issue.

You can also check if the appliance is still under warranty. This is an added bonus for potential buyers and will most likely increase their interest. Although warranties rarely extend beyond a few years, it doesn’t hurt to double check.

Electronics

Electronic devices are usually plentiful in any household. They include old TVs, mobile phones, even vacuums, and mixers. They are also some of the most common items sold online. This is because repair shops break them down and use them as spare parts.

Remember to list any problems with the device. Also remember not to set a price too high, because nothing moves faster than electronics. Every day newer models are hitting the market, making yours an outdated used item.
